The idea sounds tempting: instead of paying developers tens or hundreds of thousands of rubles, just ask an AI to build the site. And technically, it works — Claude and ChatGPT can actually generate working HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, and help with the backend. But will this capability turn into a real, working website that makes money? Let's look at it honestly — without hype and without underselling AI's capabilities.

How Websites Are Built with AI

Before talking about pros and cons, we need to understand the process. There are several approaches.

Pure code generation. You open a chat with Claude or ChatGPT, describe the desired site, and get HTML/CSS files. You copy them to a hosting service — the site works. Suitable for simple single-page sites.

Using "AI builders." Services like Wix ADI, Tilda with AI features, specialized AI builders. You describe what you want — the system generates a visual editor with a ready template that you can tweak with a mouse.

Hybrid approach. You use AI as an assistant: it generates code, explains things, completes pieces, but you understand what you're doing, deploy to a server, and configure SEO. This is closer to the work of a beginner developer using an AI helper.

This article mainly focuses on the first two scenarios — when a non-developer tries to build a website without programmers.

Pros of Building a Website with ChatGPT and Claude

Huge Cost Savings at the Start

The first and most obvious benefit. Building a simple website with a developer costs from tens of thousands of rubles for a landing page to hundreds of thousands for a corporate site. With AI, a basic site can be built with zero development costs — only hosting and domain.

For early entrepreneurs without revenue, for testing hypotheses, for trying out an idea, for a personal project without commercial ambitions — this is a huge advantage.

Speed

A simple landing page can be built in a few hours if you know what you want. Even complex multi-page sites with basic logic come together in days, not weeks. Ordering a site from a studio means briefing, requirement approvals, design mockups, layout, and programming — all together that's weeks of work.

Low Barrier to Entry

You don't need to know HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. It's enough to explain what you want and understand the basic logic of websites. The AI will write the code itself, explain how to deploy it, and help with homework.

Opportunity to Learn in the Process

This is often underestimated. By building a website with AI, you gradually understand how web development works. You see the code, read explanations, experiment. It's a great way to enter the profession or at least become a more informed client in the future.

Full Control Over the Process

When you build a site yourself, you don't depend on a developer's availability, mood, or schedule. Want to fix text in the footer at three in the morning? Open the code, ask Claude for help, fix it. No queues, no approvals.

Works for Simple Tasks

A landing page for an event, a business card site, a portfolio, a small catalog site with a dozen items, a personal blog — AI handles all of this at a level that will satisfy most users.

Cons and Pitfalls

Shallow Results on Complex Tasks

As soon as the site stops being a simple business card and requires logic — cart, user account, filters, payment, integrations — problems begin. AI generates code but doesn't understand your business context. It doesn't know the specifics of payment systems in your country. It doesn't account for data protection law requirements. It doesn't think about scalability.

The result: a site that seems to work on demo data but crashes under real load, loses client data, and breaks on the first non-standard situation.

SEO Problems

This is a huge stumbling block. AI generates beautiful pages but almost never makes them automatically search-engine optimized. Semantic core, proper heading structure, meta tags, page speed, mobile adaptability, schema.org markup, sitemap, robots.txt, internal linking — all of this requires conscious work.

The result: the site is built, but it doesn't appear in search. And the most painful part — you discover this in 3-6 months, when time and effort have already been invested, but there's no traffic.

Security Problems

AI honestly writes code but doesn't take responsibility for vulnerabilities. Simple contact forms without spam and injection protection. API keys left in the code. Open access points to the database. No protection against XSS and CSRF attacks. For an experienced attacker, such sites are easy prey.

This becomes especially painful when the site starts handling payments or client personal data. A leak will cost much more than the money saved on development.

Performance and Scalability Issues

While the site has 5 visitors per day — everything's fine. But when you launch ads and 5000 people arrive — the site crashes. AI may not account for the subtleties of database query optimization, caching, and asynchronous processing. This knowledge comes with practice and training.

Support and Updates

Let's say the site works. A year passes. You need to update the services block, add a new section, change the design to match current trends. And then it turns out you remember how you built it — roughly. No documentation. Logic scattered everywhere. Every change becomes a quest because the AI generates code anew each time, with no memory of previous context. Over time, the site turns into an unmaintainable zoo.

Uniqueness and Design

Sites built with AI are often recognizable. Generic layouts, template illustrations, standard color schemes, predictable fonts. Unique, truly memorable design requires designer work, brand understanding, and product thinking. AI is good at execution but poor at concept.

Legal and Regulatory Nuances

Running a website isn't just code. You need a privacy policy, consent for data processing, proper domain registration, sometimes specific server location requirements, registration as a data operator. AI won't highlight these questions on its own, and ignoring them risks fines.

Platform Dependence

If you build a site through an AI builder, you become dependent on the platform. Want to migrate your data — that turns out to be hard. Service raises prices — you'll pay. Service shuts down — you lose everything. This is a serious risk for businesses with long-term plans.

When AI Really Is Right for Building a Website

Honestly speaking, there are categories of tasks where AI does excellently:

A personal landing page or portfolio, a simple business card for a micro-business, a page for a one-time event (wedding, party, conference), an MVP or prototype to test a hypothesis, an internal tool for a team, an educational project with no commercial expectations.

In all these cases, saving on development is justified, and the shortcomings of an AI-built site aren't critical.

When You Can't Avoid Specialists

And here are the cases when it's better not to cut corners:

An online store with real sales, a corporate website of a reputation-driven company, a project promoted through SEO with expectations of organic traffic, a platform with users and their data, a marketplace or classified site, a mobile app, a project with a serious marketing budget, any business where the website is the main sales channel.

In these scenarios, saving on development turns into direct financial losses: lost revenue, fines, data leaks, low conversions, no traffic. A well-built site pays for itself many times over. A poorly built one is an anchor.

The Bottom Line

AI is a breakthrough that really changes the rules of the game in web development. And we at ItDigital.pro actively use Claude and other AI tools to work faster and better on client projects. This is normal, this is the future, and resisting it is foolish.

But like any tool, AI has limits of applicability. Building a simple website yourself with ChatGPT or Claude is a great idea. Trying to build a serious commercial project with them alone, without specialists — is a typical trap that costs more than proper development from the start.
